Call Chris Alli to order, Mamora tells Obasanjo
By Habib Aruna
Assistant
Political Editor, Lagos
Senator
Olorunnimbe Mamora has called on President Olusegun Obasanjo to caution
the Sole Administrator of Plateau State, Major-General Chris Alli (rtd.),
in the exercise of his powers, just as he said unfettered powers might
spell doom for the polity.
Speaking
with Daily Independent on phone from Abuja Wednesday, Mamora expressed
fear that if the sole administrator is not called to order, the
unintended consequences that he had cause to talk about in the past would
happen.
Alli,
a former Chief of Army Staff, was in May, 2004, appointed by the
President to replace the Plateau State Governor, Joshua Dariye, in the
aftermath of the imposition of a state of emergency in the crisis-prone
state.
The
sole administrator has come under intense criticisms from the leadership
of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which accused him of going beyond
his mandate. The PDP had said Alli should only concern himself with the
maintenance of peace and security rather than tampering with structures
and institutions on the ground.
But
Mamora, who represents Lagos East Senatorial District, recollected the
position he took when the issue was brought to the Senate Chambers that
emergency rule would jump-start a journey to the unknown. “Alli should limit
himself to the issue of security, law and order and settlement of
displaced persons instead of overstretching his brief”, said Mamora, who
added that what is going on in Plateau State should be of concern to
Nigerians.
He
pointed out that the reorganisation embarked upon by Alli was not part of
his brief, adding that it bothers on over- zealousness, which, according
to him, should be condemned.
“The
man should be called to order to refrain from going ahead to carry out
the so-called re-organisation. He should limit himself to the issue of
security. Alli should not act beyond his brief by unnecessarily embarking
on what he was not sent”, said Mamora, who was the former Speaker of the
Lagos State House of Assembly.
