Bring justice to the assassins, deputy gov tells NBA By Emma Gbemudu, Correspondent, Yenogoa Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Goodluck Jonathan has challenged the Bar and Bench to bring to justice the perpetrators of incessant assassinations in the country. According to Jonathan, bringing the culprits to justice would reduce the spate of insurgence causing fear in the society. The deputy governor spoke in Yenagoa while declaring open the Nigerian Bar Association conference of the leaders of the former Eastern Region. He told NBA to fashion out ways of addressing subservient roles of states in relation to the Federal Government. “The move is imperative to make the states have some level of autonomy like the former regional governments in the past to enable us compete favourably in revenue generation machinery to the centre,” Jonathan said. While pledging government’s commitment to continue to maintain existing cordial relations between the leadership of the Bar and Bench in the state, the deputy governor said both were partners in progress. Earlier, the Chairman of NBA in the state, Mr. Rex Ogbukwu, noted that the forum was borne out of necessity, being the first to be hosted in Bayelsa State. To this end, Ogbukwu said it would provide a front for the region to articulate its common interest and make recommendations to the national body. He said the meeting was a prelude to the forthcoming National Executive Committee of the NBA to be hosted in the state.         Copyright� 2002.
