Release our people
detained over LG election
Permit me a space in your widely read
newspapers to let Nigerians and the entire world know the evils perpetrated by
President (Chief) Olusegun Obasanjo, the Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga
Daniel, and members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State in the last
local government polls.
The last local government election of 27th of March
2004 was full of evils and election malpractice carried out by the PDP through
out the country in all her controlled States - of course, Ogun State was not an
exception in these evils and
malpractices, where state INEC actually disqualified the most popular
Chairmanship and Councillorship candidates of other political parties barely 15
hours before the election, while the candidates of PDP were left intact.
This ungodly, unlawful, undemocratic and very sinful
last-minute disqualification by the PDP government was greeted by peaceful
protest by the anxious voters who were ready to elect candidates of their
choice in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.
As if the disqualifications were not enough the Ogun
State Police Command under the instruction of the Federal Government arrested
people of the land that belonged to other political parties since March 2004,
after the allegation that they were behind the peaceful protest.
One would want to ask: Mr. President, why have 21
arrested people been taken to Abuja for detention over an issue that
concerns who should govern them in
the Local Government Area?
Sir, the whole communities know those behind the
unconstitutional detention of their people. We pray none of them should die
while in unlawful detention as this may lead to uncontrollable civil unrest in
Ogun Water- side Local Government Area.
Let Mr. President know that we are peace-loving and
law-abiding people in Ogun Waterside. Please don't let this issue tear our
Local Government apart.
Please, release these detainees and allow peace to
reign in our area.
