AKURE— THE Ondo State Oil Producing Development Commission (OSOPADEC), an Intervention Agency put in place by the state government to cater for the wellbeing of the people in the oil-producing communities in Ondo State has awarded scholarship to 973 students worth over N25million .
The chairman of the agency, Dr. Ibunkun Omotehinse stated this yesterday while presenting the cheque to the beneficiaries of the commission's scholarship scheme for the year 2003/2004 academic section in Akure.
Dr. Omotehinse said that the grant in aid for scholarship was made all-inclusive so that many students will have a share in the dividend of democracy.
According to him, of the 973 students, 9 are pursuing their Ph.D., 32 Masters degree, 589 undergraduates, 137 in polytechnics, 139 Colleges of Education and 81 students of Health Technology and Nursing.
He explained that University undergraduate students were awarded N25,000.00 , post graduates N40,000.00, Ph.D. students N70,000.00, students of polytechnics and colleges of educations N20,000.00, and students of school of nursing and health technology N15,000.00.
The chairman added that the commission would ensure that successful applicants were fairly distributed among oil-producing communities in the all producing areas.
He pointed out that the commission had also commenced the low land rice production with over 100 hectares of land acquired in the oil-producing community of the state.
Already, the commission, he added, has started a rice demonstration farm at Ugbonla in Ilaje Local Government area, to begin the rice production revolution in the state.
Stressing, the commission chairman said that the demonstration farm was being prepared in readiness for the next planting season which start in October, adding that the programme was aimed at empowering the potentials and actual rice farmers and to teach them the modern technology of rice cultivation through the demonstration farm. Dr. Omotehinse pointed out that apart from the two hectares of land for the demonstration farm, the commission had also begun clearing of additional 100 hectares to expand the programme
