Asaba — DELTA State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Charles Akaya says that his command has uncovered an illegal arms factory at Akwukwu-Igbo, in Delta State, and the owner arrested.
The Commissioner also announced that apart from the discovery of the illegal arms factory, five suspected armed robbers have also been arrested while operating at Isheagu town, near Ogwashi-Uku which was the same village where the late PDP chieftain, Chief A.K. Dikibo was killed in February this year.
Both the illegal arms manufacturer and the five robbery suspects were paraded at the state police headquarters Asaba.
The Commissioner of Police told reporters that last Sunday at about 2am “at Akwukwu-Igbo, our men carried out a raid on suspected black spots where one Ifechukwu Nwokobia of Ogbeani quarters Akwukwu-Igbo was arrested with a dane gun which he confessed to have stolen from one Obi Monye and during interrogation, he led the police to one Yadi Eze of Ogboniha quarters Akwukwu-Igbo. He was said to be a local arms manufacturer who is patronized by suspected armed robbers and so he was arrested and some arms manufacturing implements were recovered.
"Also on the 4th July, 2004, at about 4.00am, policemen on pin-down duty along Ogwashi-Uku/Kwale road received a distress call that five armed men had invaded new site quarters, Isheagu town in Aniocha South local government. They (policemen) rushed to the scene where the armed men engaged them in gun battle and one of the robbers was injured and died instantly while others esceaped into the bush with bullet wounds. We were satisfied that the robbery was aborted. Thirteen expended cartridges, one locally made pistol and one cut-to-size double barrel gun were recovered at the scene while inside the pocket of the dead robber were nine live cartridges and some charms.”
