ASABA — THE Asagba of Asaba, Obi Chike Edozien has accused the Delta State government of allegedly acquiring mass hectres of the community’s land while pretending to utilise them for Government business but only to end up transferring them to individual moneybags who in turn re-sell them.
He noted that even when the lands are acquired, compensation is not paid. He described the situation as “unjust and oppressive,” while he called on Government to redress the situation by “having a second look at this matter.”
The monarch stated this in Asaba yesterday while addressing a press conference in his palace as part of the activities to celebrate his 13th coronation anniversary.
Said he: “Our community is blessed with a lot of human resources required for socio-economic development. However, one of our resources, land, which could have generated revenue for the town, has been acquired by Government without any compensation. Even though Government can justify its action under the Land Use Act, we (Asaba people) see the Act as very unjust and any action taken under that Act as oppressive. We have thus been dis-empowered and wish to appeal to Government to have a second look at this matter. We can appreciate the acquisition of land for purely government business.
However, to acquire land on behalf of individuals many, of whom now engage in trading with such lands to the chagrin of the erstwhile owners of the land, certainly calls for a reconsideration,” he stated.
The Asagba, however, condemned the activities of some youths in the community who are fond of harassing and disturbing legimate land owners from developing their property, saying that the palace was behind the state government’s move to checkmate such menacing behaviour,” adding that “we are using traditional sanctions and also taking them to the police.”
