Don't Militarise Rivers, Lawmaker Tells Govt

Rivers State government has been advised not to militarise the state in the name of using maximunm force to bring lasting peace to crisis-rocked communities in the state.

This call was made by the state Deputy Leader of House of Assembly, Hon. James George Fuayefika during an interview with THISDAY.

He said: "We are not in the military era. The important thing is not sending military any how. We give him (the Governor) the mandate that he should use maximum force. It does not mean he should militarise the whole state."

Reacting to the question why the state government has not introduced military partrol in Okrika which has similar crisis and problem as some other communities now with heavy combined military partrol, Fuayafika, who is the lawmaker reprsenting the Okrika State Constituency of the state, disclosed that the problem in Okrika was not political but of chieftancy of wrangling.

"Okrika people have a problem. The problem they have hingeg on chieftaincy; who became the Amanyanabo of Okrika. Since the death of S.U.Ogan, one Dr. A.S Abana and Degojo Ogonbo have been in court unfortunately they are not following the law of the land to bring amicable resolution of the case," he noted.

He acknowledged the efforts made by the chairman of the traditional council of chief in the area and the peace moves by the Chairman of Okrika Local Government area, Prince Ibibia Walter, saying peace has returned to the area.

The deputy leader, who frowned at the level of militia activities in the state, said terrorism is a threat to democracy and must not be allowed to exist.
