Police, Airforce Officers Clash in Lagos By Eugene Agha and Yemi Akinsuyi Pandemonium broke out yesterday at PWD stretch of the Lagos Abeokuta Expressway when fighting broke out between some policemen from the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti Street, Yaba and some Airforce personnel from the Airforce Base, Ikeja. Trouble, it was gathered, started following the alleged refusal of some Air Force men to allow the policemen from Panti to effect the arrest of some suspected robbers who were operating from a mechanic workshop located opposite the Airforce base. Although, the actual cause of the trouble could not be ascertained as at the time this report was filed, however, the crises almost grounded business and vehicular movement along the Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway, as passersby scampered to safety for fear of being caught in between the cross fire. A witness alleged that some group of policemen in mufti stormed a mechanic workshop to effect the arrest of some technicians attached to the workshop. According to the witness, while the raid was on, some Airforce personnel stormed the area demanding for the release of all the arrested persons, a demand which he said did not go down well with the police officers. "Argument later ensued which later degenerated into physical battle between the security men" the witness said.
