House Vows to Stall Abuja Exchange Privatisation From Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja House of Representatives has vowed to work with other stakeholders to stall the proposed privatisation of the Abuja Commodity Exchange. Speaking to National Assembly Correspondents yesterday, the House Committee Chairman on Capital Market, Hon Aliyu Wadada, said already his Committee has met with the Central Bank of Nigeria, NICON Insurance, Nigeria Re-Insurance, with a view to ensuring that the exchange was not sold off. "The House of Representatives and indeed, the National Assembly will do everything to stall privatisation of the Abuja Commodity Exchange. You cannot privatise what does not exist. The exchange has not effectively taken off and you start talking of privatisation, it is not done. We had a meeting with CBN, NICON Insurance, Nigeria Re-Insurance and we will be meeting again on the modalities, we will stall it', he vowed. Wadada said an option was already being explored, as the Federal Government has constituted a team headed by Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Ms. Ama Pepple, to see to the repackaging of the exchange. He said as a follow up, his Committee would embark on tour of Japan and Malaysia to understudy how their exchanges work, adding, "it is a viable project if well packaged. We have held a meeting with a view to stalling the privatisation". He said there was need to review the Exchange and Investment Act, adding that they were planning a workshop for early next month where the issue of the review, as well as unclaimed dividends would be addressed.
