Obasanjo Charges Soldiers to Protect Democracy

President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that the greatest contributions the Nigerian Army can make to national development was the preservation and protection of the nation's infant democracy.
The President made the declaration in his address to officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army at the Nigerian Army Day Celebrations (NADCEL) 2004 held at the IBB Square, Bauchi on Tuesday.
Represented by Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Obasanjo noted that the achievements of any Army worldwide, "is measured in terms of performance in operations which in turn depends on the level of training", pointing out that "given the current trends and happenings in our polity, your training initiatives must take into cognizance the need to preserve and protect our nascent democracy."
He said that "after all, the entire concept of national development is predicated on the existence of peace and security, consequently, the defence of the nation against external aggression and internal insurrection which is your major constitutional role, is the crux of this security."
While commending the Nigerian Army for evolving new innovation in the training of its officers and men which he noted will go a long way in revolutionalising their "training system in line with modern trends and the demands of modern warfare", he however enjoined them to "lay a lot of emphasis on joint/combined training of all arms and services of the Nigerian Army."
According to him, "to be effective and efficient in your roles, appropriate structures must be in place to enhance your state of combat readiness and sustenance of professional ethics of loyalty, discipline and espirit-de-corps", adding that "activities packaged for NADCEL must, therefore, serve as the fulcrum for a critical self-evaluation and mapping out strategies for improving on the standard achieved so far."
