From Efem Nkanga in Uyo
Akwa Ibom State government has spent N2.2 billion on the construction of a comprehensive drainage network for Uyo, in order to end the constant flooding of the metropolis.
The Special Adviser to the state governor on Political and legislative affairs, Mr Udo Ekpenyong disclosed this in a chat with THISDAY in Uyo.
He said that the menace of flooding was largely due to the ongoing construction and rehabilitation of roads in the state capital.
He regretted the inconveniences presently being experienced by the residents and stated that it was a temporary inconvenience resulting from the ongoing works that must be done in order to improve the quality of lives of the people inorder to impact positively on them.
Ekpenyong called for the support and understanding of the people as the government seeks to give Uyo a facelift and bring the benefits of democracy to the people. He stated that the inconvenience of demolition of structures and menace of flooding were personal sacrifices the people have to make for the renewal of Uyo.
Commenting on the formation of political parties by groups accross the 31 local government areas in the state, Ekpenyong denied that the state government had its hand in the formation of political groups of any kind. He added that groups were quite free to form political groups but warned them against dragging the state government into their formations.
According to him, the Attah administration was not interested in political formations for 2007,but was presently occupied in accelerating the development of the state and bringing the dividends of democracy to the people in the shortest possible time.
He called on the people and all groups to come together in unity and join hands to support the government in its efforts to develop the state and bring in the dividends of democracy to the citizenry.
