ICPC Arraigns Former NFA Scribe Over N2m Fraud
From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) yesterday charged former Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Dr. Ahmed Tijani Yusuf to court for corrupt practices.

In a release made available to THISDAY and signed by Mike Sowe of the Public Enlightenment Department of the Commission, Yusuf was accused of conspiring with Mr. Tim Ter TyokyiaaAbari, Head of Accounts of NFA to pay themselves the sum of N1.2 million for a non existent contract. Yusuf was also charged with collecting another sum of N800,000 from the coffers of the Association for a non-existent contract. He was also accused of knowingly furnishing false statements by presenting a fake quotation purportedly issued by Tenmins Nigeria Limited.

On his part, Abari was charged for collecting the sum of N400,000 from the coffers of the NFA for a non-existed contract.

ICPC prosecutor, Henry Emore told the Court that the third accused, Mr. Adelowo John was arraigned for abetting Yusuf and Abari by paying to them various sums of money.

The 11 count charge against the three NFA officials indicated that the offences which contravenes sections 16, 19, and 26 of ICPC Act were all committed in December 2000.

The three accused persons were granted bail by the presiding Judge, Justice Ishaq Bello of the High Court, Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory, while the case was adjourned to September 23 2004 for hearing.

Yusuf was twice secretary general of the Glass House. First in 1994 and eight years later. Ironically on both occassions he was at the helm when the Eagles qualified for the World Cup (USA '94 and Korea/Japan 2002) and on both occassions failed to travel with them because he was removed as scribe.
