NRA Elections: Enugu Chapter Pulls Out
From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja
The Enugu Chapter of the Nigeria Football Referees Association has pulled out of participating in the Association's elections stating that a suit is pending in court challening it. The NRA headed by Col. Joro Dogo Yabilsu has schduled the electiosn for Lagos next month.
But at a press conference yesterday, the Chairman of the Enugu Chapter, Barrister Ray Nnaji stated that the Chapter was against the procedure and election guidelines released for the societies elections which it described as "manifestly fradulent and designed to favour candidates of their choice."
He also stated that Article 15, 16 and 17 of the guidelines for societies elections are designed to asphysiate contestants who have no link or nexus to Yabilsu.
"Article 15: Elections results shall reach the NRA Electoral Committee not later than five days of the elections.
"Article 16: All protest(s) on the election shall reach the Electoral Committee not later than 48 hours after the election. Failure to adhere to these guidelines shall render such protest null and void.
The protest shall be endorsed by the Electoral Officer within two hours of the election and copies of which must be given to the society/persons protested against.
"Article 17: The decision of the Electoral Committee on all protests shall be final and remain binding and cannot be challenged in any Law Court".
Nnaji said according to the above guidelines, this is the first time in the history of any elections in Nigeria where the electoral officers are also the jude to determine election petitions - and where protest by candidates must also be signed by the person the petitioner is protesting against and all must be done within two hours of the election, notwithstanding that the result may not have even reached the electoral committee.
"The fact that the guidlines are designed to oust the jurisdiction of the court under a democratic setting speaks volumes for the intention of Col. Yabilsu and his gang. We cannot therefore be part of any election where the accused would end up as the judge and you cannot ask for outside arbitration. You are therefore at the mercy of Yabilsu," he said.
