Akinfenwa, myself are best of friends, says
Akande
By Tolu Olarewaju
Senior Correspondent, Lagos
The Chairman of a faction of
the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Chief Bisi Akande, has declared that
despite the political differences between him and his rival factional
leader, Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa, they remain best of friends.
The former Osun State chief executive, who
was speaking with journalists after a meeting of Afenifere in Ijebu Igbo,
Ogun State, declined to comment on efforts to resolve the lingering feud
between him and Akinfenwa. He however said that it has not affected their
personal life to the extent that he had lunch with him previous Saturday.
He also said that if asked to step down
for Akinfenwa, he would willingly do so as long as it is the collective
wish of the party.
Asked to react to Major General Abdulkareem
Adisa (retd)’s comment that
the Yoruba would vote for General Ibrahim Babangida at the
presidential election despite his role in the annulment of June 12, 1993
presidential election won by the late Chief MKO Abiola, he said the
question could best be answered by Yoruba leaders.
Here is full text of the brief encounter:
How far have you gone with regard to the reconciliation move
between you and the other factional leader, Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa?
We have not discussed that at today’s
meeting by the time I left the meeting.
When are you likely to discuss it?
I don’t know. But we are discussing the
reorganisation of our movement, the Afenifere.
Akinfenwa has ruled out the possibility of having any other
convention and this is barely three months to INEC deadline. How would
you react to this?
As long as the comment never has any
adverse effect on the relationship between him and me, I’m not angry
about any comment. You may be surprised if I tell you that last Saturday,
I had lunch with him in his home. We are best of friends.
General Abdulkareem Adisa once said that the Yoruba have forgiven
General Badamasi Babangida who is alleged to be eyeing the presidency in
2007. How far is this true? Will they endorse his candidature?
That question will be best for the leaders
of the Yoruba. As for AD, the party is not likely to vote for somebody
who is not a member of AD.
Suppose you were asked to step down for Akinfenwa, what would be
your reaction?
If it is the collective wish of the AD today, I will.
