Govt orders tighter security over terrorism
By Alex Olise

TO check terrorism in the country, the Federal Government has directed the military, police and other security agencies to beef up security within the nation's sea and airports.

With the directive, more security operatives have been deployed to strategic locations seen as major routes from which terrorists can easily operate.

Defence sources told The Guardian that the Nigerian Navy had started 24-hour patrol of the nation's sea ports to keep terrorists at bay.

As part of security arrangement, all port operators have implemented the International Shipping and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS).

The Guardian visited most ports yesterday and saw a fresh team of security operatives at the port.

At the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) anyone caught patrolling the premises without any reason is to be arrested and detained.

Also at the airport, it is now difficult for people to gain easy access except after thorough screening.

Besides, the Police have been directed to tighten security at the country's borders by working in concert with other agencies like the Customs and Immigration Services.

Force Public Relations Officer Chris Olakpe, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) said the Nigeria Police had been specially trained to tackle any crime
