Odili tasks Customs on illegal arms

GOVERNOR Peter Odili of Rivers State has called on the Nigerian Customs Service to check the Illegal entry of sophisticated weapons into the country.

He said the rate at which sophisticated weapons were being brought into the country was alarming, adding that the situation had contributed to the criminal activities.

The governor made the call in Port Harcourt on Tuesday while receiving the Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs, Zone C, Mr. Funsho Amasa, who paid him a courtesy visit.

He said the weapons were not manufactured locally and urged the NCS to ensure strict and fully scrutiny of every items entering the country.

"Security reports indicated that the level of sophistication of these weapons points to the fact that they are coming from abroad," he said, wondering how they sneaked through customs checkpoints undetected.

The governor, however, commended the assistant comptroller-general for the huge revenue generated by the service in 2003 and gave an assurance that Rivers government would assist in making the job of policing the borders more effective.

Earlier, Amasa said he had been posted to head the new zonal headquarters, which had been relocated from Owerri to Port Harcourt.

He described Rivers as the biggest customs revenue yielding state in the country, saying that N62 billion was generated from the state as duties last year.
