Kpakol lauds research institute

THE Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi, Lagos (FIIRO), has been described as an important ally to the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) in the nation's fight against poverty.
Speaking during a visit to the Institute yesterday, the National Co-ordinator of NAPEP, Dr. Magnus I. Kpakol said FIIRO was a storehouse for innovative ideas where NAPEP could tap from and with which a partnership against poverty could be formed to the benefit of the nation.
He said there was a convergence of goals between NAPEP and FIIRO as both seek ultimately the economic empowerment of Nigerians and the industrialisation of the country.
According to him, research institutes like FIIRO, because of its ingenuity and creativity remains the nation's hope in a world that is growing more competitive.
Kpakol urged FIIRO to push further the frontiers of its achievements by evolving and modifying technological processes relevant to the nation's fight against poverty.
He also urged local entrepreneurs and industrialists to identity with FIIRO by seeking from the institute numerous areas of co-operation that would be of benefit to them as well as to the country.
The Director-General FIIRO, Dr. Oluwole Olatunji had earlier told Kpakol that the institute was capable of helping the nation's fight against poverty, since it simplified technologies and processes that could be employed by small and medium scale entrepreneurs.
Referring to inadequate funding as one of its challenges, Olatunji said there was need for money for new equipment, chemicals and continued training of its scientists.
The co-ordinator had earlier been taken round the institute's laboratories and departments, such as the chemical oilseeds laboratory, food technology department, environmental technology and industrial equipment fabrication department.
