Air Force, police clash over colleague's death
By Alex Olise, Defence/Police Affairs Reporter

SCORES of Airforce men yesterday stormed the Area F Police Command, Ikeja, Lagos, to protest the death of one of their colleagues who was reportedly hit by a bullet allegedly shot by a policeman on Tuesday.

According to reports, policemen had gone to the Sam Ethinan Airforce Base, Ikeja, to arrest some suspected armed robbers but were allegedly prevented from doing so by Airforce men.

In the process, a police officer shot into the air to scare the Airforce men.

This shooting angered the airmen and they re-enforced to disarm the policemen. In the process, another trigger was pulled this time hitting one of the airmen on the thigh.

The Guardian learnt that the officer bled profusely and was confirmed dead yesterday.

The news of his death sparked off another round of protest as scores of armed airmen took their vengeance on the Area F Command, Ikeja.

Eyewitnesses said Airmen descended on policemen at the Command, injuring a good number of them.

A senior officer at the Airforce Base said his men were not happy with the incident, adding that if the issue was not well handled it could lead to another bloody clash.

Police spokesman in Lagos, Mr. Emmanuel Ighodalo, could not confirm if the airforce man hit by the police bullet died, but said the victim was hit when he tried to disarm a policeman who had gone with others to arrest armed robbers in the base.

This is the second time military men would engage the police in clashes this year.

The first occurred at Area C when some soldiers clashed with policemen in Surulere area of the state.
