GSM firms protest multiple taxes
From Segun Ayeoyenikan, Abuja

A FORUM of the Global Satellite of Mobile Communications (GSM) operators in the country yesterday decried alleged multiple taxes imposed on them by the three tiers of government.

The forum, which comprised MTN, V-Mobile, Glo-Mobile and M-Tel, disclosed this in a joint statement issued at the end of their meeting held in Abuja recently.

The firms said additional levies on the operators would increase cost of operation and reduce rapid network rollout especially in rural areas.

Such additional costs, they said, would compromise operators' ability to provide affordable mobile services to the populace and send wrong signals to financial quarters considering the cost of doing business in Nigeria.

The statement, however, endorsed the Federal Government's directive that recharge cards be produced locally.

The forum held that the move by government would generate employment locally and save substantial foreign exchange for the country.

Other resolutions reached by the telecommunications firms include:

  • a call on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to adopt a realistic and acceptable basis of calculating spectrum charges in line with International benchmarks;

  • telecoms operators in Nigeria should be represented on the National Frequency Board (NFB);

  • the forum will present a unified position to the National Assembly on areas of review in the Nigerian Communications Act 2003.
