Govt to increase hospitals for AIDS drugs

MORE hospitals offering anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs to people living with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) are to be established by the Federal Government.

This was disclosed yesterday by the Health Minister, Prof. Eyitayo Lambo, in a message to mark the fourth anniversary of the Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kudu, Jigawa. The minister said the existing 25 ARV centres were not adequate.

Lambo was represented by the Health Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Umar Aji.

He stressed the determination of the government to implement its comprehensive health sector reform agenda, for which N26 billion had been budgeted this year.

Lambo praised the efforts of the medical centre in the past four years, saying his ministry had designed it for the provision of free first line care to accident victims.

This will be in addition to serving as one of the new ARV centres and a service provider for the National Health Insurance Scheme, he stated.

The centre's Medical Director, Dr. Bashir Umar, had earlier presented a progress report of the centre.

He cited the provision of clinical training to some 1,500 student nurses, the rise in the number of doctors from three at inception to 33 and the growth of nursing workers' strength from 12 to 79.

Seven consultants had been recruited, he said, adding that the centre had been accredited to train intern pharmacists and laboratory technologists.

However, Umar said the non-release of capital grants to the hospital in the past three years had retarded its expansion efforts.
