CNPP seeks fresh probe of Ige's murder
From John-Abba Ogbodo Abuja

THE Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) yesterday vowed to strengthen its opposition to perceived anomalies of the President Olusegun Obasanjo's administration.

The group also disclosed that it has contacted several pro-democracy activists in the country for the purpose.

Its Secretary-General, Maxi Okwu, at a press conference in Abuja, also called for a fresh probe into the murder of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige.

Okwu said that from the court ruling on the murder, the government did not do a tidy job in its investigation process.

He argued that it is imperative for President Obasanjo to ensure that the proper steps are taken, considering that the late Ige brought the South-West into Obasanjo's camp.

Okwu said: "Why should the State not do a thorough investigation

  • Why should the State not take this matter as a critical issue since it concerns a former chief law officer of the federation and a prominent member of the power that be
  • The President has a duty to his friend who gave him political relief to order the IG to re-investigate the case so that proper job could be done. If that does not happen, it will be unfortunate."

He alleged that the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) comprised mainly card-carrying members of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

Also, the secretary-general called for the removal of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Akin Olujinmi (SAN), saying he had misled the President on several occasions.

Okwu cited the proclamation of emergency rule in Plateau State as one wrong decision taken by the government.

"We therefore believe that very poor quality legal advice is being given to Obasanjo and of course in a democracy where things are in order, the attorney-general has no business to continue to be the attorney-general of the federation," he said.

He called on the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to publish the names of governors looting their states.

The CNPP scribe also expressed concern over the way electoral cases are being handled at the various tribunals across the country.

He said the CNPP would soon come out with publications on the different shortcomings of the current administration.

Some of these will include "Election Petition Tribunal: Mission Impossible", Emergency Rule in Plateau State: Final phase of Dictatorship in Nigeria and "Sovereign National Conference Now!"
