ABUJA — THE Niger Delta Development Commission yesterday said it had so far received the sum of N86 billion from both the federal, states and oil companies since inception three years ago.
Of this amount, the commission, according to its Managing Director, Mr. Emmanuel Aguariavwodo has so far spent N70 billion for its various projects in the nine oil-producing states in the country. The NDDC boss who appeared before the House Committee on Public Accounts in Abuja yesterday however lamented that funding still remains the commission’s greatest problem.
According to the NDDC boss, of the money so far received by the Commission, the federal government contribution stands at N28 billion. He however regretted that no money has been released to the commission since the beginning of this year. He said that the commission has on-going projects in all the nine oil producing states while it has its presence in over one hundred and fifty local government areas in the affected states.
Mr. Aguariavwodo said the commission was still computing the total amount due the commission from the various agencies that are by law expected to contribute to the funding of the commission. He stated that the commission is being hampered in the execution of projects in the area because of the difficult terrain, noting that projects that should take not more than one year before completion sometimes take up to three years.
Making a strong case for proper funding, Mr. Agauriavwodo stated that unless the situation improves the president’s vision for the commission might not be met. Chairman of the House committee on Public Accounts, Mr. Olu Adeyemi said the committee would soon embark on a tour of the projects claimed to have been executed by the commission. He said the committee would find out from the office of the Accountant-General why monies appropriated for the commission in this year’s budget had not been released.
