Nobody called for extension of state of emergency—TAPGUN

By Taye Obateru
Thursday, July 08, 2004

JOS: SECOND civilian governor of Plateau State Mr. Fidelis Tapgun has described as untrue reports that the stake holders from the state who visited President Olusegun Obasanjo last week called for an extension of the state of emergency in the state.

Tapgun who was one of the facilitators of the visit by the ‘stakeholders forum’ made the clarification in a chat with newsmen Wednesday that the team only went to thank President Obasanjo for the relative peace that returned to the state as a result of a state of emergency.”It is not true that we called for the extension of the state of emergency; that would amount to jumping the gun.

What we are concerned about now is to ensure that the peace that has started to return is improved upon until full normalcy returns. We did not say anything about extension of the emergency” he declared. He said all they did apart from thanking Mr. President, was to plead with him to give further assistance to the Administrator, General Chris Alli whom he said has been doing a good job, to enable him consolidate on what has been achieved so far.

However, Tapgun who is the immediate past Nigerian Ambassador to Kenya acknowledged that some people within the state were not happy with the trip by the group to Abuja and this might have been responsible to the wrong insinuations on its mission. He said the group realized that the money approved for the administrator would not be enough to take care of the enormous task of rebuilding the state which made it decide to appeal for more funds and other security and logistic needs.
