Delta Assembly recalls suspended lawmakers

By Austin Ogwuda
Thursday, July 08, 2004

ASABA — Delta State House of Assembly  said yesterday it has decided to recall its four members suspended last month following the purported impeachment plot against the leadership of the House, following the intervention of the governor, party leaders and well-meaning Deltans on the issue.

Also the House has passed a resolution calling on President Olusegun Obasanjo to direct the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr. Funso Kupolokun to re-absorb its casual workers who were recently sacked from the organization.

Mr. Pius Ewherido who moved the motion later told reporters that “I consider it inhuman and highly insensitive for any organization to throw out its staff that served for over 15 years like that into the unemployment market.”

The four suspended members namely: Mr. Basil Ganagana, former Speaker  of the Assembly; Mr. Festus Agas, former Deputy Speaker and Messrs. Ojaife Odebala and Misan Ukubeyinje representing Sapele and Warri North constituency respectively will now resume sitting with the rest of their colleagues as from the August 2, 2004.

The House panel set up to investigate the culpability of the four legislators turned in its report during the sitting of the House yesterday and roundly indicted them saying that the "coup” was actually conceived and planned during the recent visit of all the members of the House to United States.

Although some members wanted to raise eyebrow about the recommendation of the investigating committee, which said that, the four members be placed on suspension for 26 sitting days of the House. But the Deputy Speaker cut in and said “I think the committee was informed by the fact that having been suspended earlier in June the period they have been at home serves as part of the punishment. I want to appeal  Mr. Speaker that in the spirit of reconciliation and in the spirit of forgiveness and for a united strong and virile House we adopt this mild recommendation."
