OWERRI — DEPUTY Governor of Imo State, Chief Ebere Udeagu wants the Federal Government to dredge Oguta Lake to facilitate tourism and commercial activities in Imo State. The Deputy Governor, in an interview in Owerri, said: “when Oguta Lake is dredged, it would facilitate commercial activities and enhance tourism both of which are necessary for the economic growth of Imo and the neighbouring states”.
After enumerating other vital benefits that would accrue to the state and her people if the Lake was dredged, the Deputy Governor also said that the state government had, since its inception in 1999, ensured that water reserves in the state were preserved. “To ensure adequate protection of the environment, the state government had taken keen interest, since it came to power in 1999, in ensuring that water bodies such as lakes, rivers, streams and underground water reserves were well preserved,” Udeagu said.
Speaking also, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment and Sanitation, Chief Val Mbamala, described the increase in solid waste generation in the state due to upsurge in population as”unprecedented”. Continuing, Chief Mbamala said that in reaction to this, government embarked on what he termed “massive attack on solid waste in Owerri municipality, set up a task force on illegal dumping of refuse, as well as illegal parking of vehicles, among other measures”. In another development, the Deputy Governor has re-echoed his call for peaceful resolution of boundary disputes.
Chief Udeagu made the call when he received in audience a team of the House of Representatives Committee on Special Duties who paid him a courtesy visit in Government House, Owerri."Imo State has maintained the record of being one of the most peaceful states in the country. This administration and her people cannot therefore afford to toy with the record by allowing protracted boundary disputes,” Udeagu said
