Nigeria Heading Towards One Party State - CNPP
Seeks fresh investigation into Ige's death
From Chuks Okocha in Abuja
The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has warned that if the current political situation is not redressed, the country would degenerate into a one party state.
CNPP, the umbrella organisation of opposition political parties in the country, also called on President Olusegun Obasanjo to order the Inspector General of Police to carry out fresh investigation into the death of the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige.
Addressing a press conference yesterday in Abuja, General Secretary of CNPP, Mr. Maxi Okwu, accused government of deliberately frustrating the actions and activities of the other political parties who have gone to the election tribunals to seek redress over the malpractices that took place in the last general elections.
"Almost all election petitions are frustrated to the advantage of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). We were asked to seek redress at the tribunal, but what is happening now is even making the tribunal an impossible option," Okwu said.
He lamented that over 95 percent of the election petitions filed by members of other political parties are gradually being frustrated.
He cautioned that from the way things are going there may not be any opposition political party, as the country will slide into a one party state.
"What are the justifications of going to the tribunals when in actual sense the outcome of the petitions are almost determined in favour of PDP? What is happening is that Nigeria is gradually becoming a one party state," he said.
Also, the CNPP has called for fresh investigations into the death of Ige.
According to Okwu, "if the Chief Law Officer of the federation is killed like a chicken and the police is being accused by the judiciary of not doing a good investigation into the matter and the government of the day keeps quiet, then we have a problem," Okwu said.
CNPP called on the President to direct the Inspector General of Police to open fresh investigations into the murder of Ige to inspire confidence in the system.
