NPA Riddled with Fraud, Says MD By Eugene Agha Managing Director of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Chief Dapo Sarumi, declared yesterday in Lagos that the authority was riddled with fraud. Sarumi who spoke at a workshop on fraud prevention and control organised by Tukod Associates Ltd, said of 29000 contracts awarded by the authority in two years before he assumed office last year, none was found to be fraud-free. "Twenty-nine thousand contracts purported to have been given before my assumption of office which involves several millions of naira, what we found was fraud of gargantuan magnitude. The size was so large such that one could hardly believe that it could take place in a public owned organisation" he said. He said further that this was the reason why the management of NPA under his leadership was going to battle corruption head long. "The magnitude of fraud committed had buried NPA so much under ground such that our bank account both home and abroad were heavily over drawn" he added. While insisting that all those indicted in the matter would never go on punish, Sarumi said a good number of people including some top management staff have been indicted by a report compiled by a committee set up by the Federal Government. He explained further that majority of the consignment which the former management alleged to have purchased were untraceable as none was in found in their record or store. Sarumi who was visibly disturbed by the type of fraud, said the extent of damage done was the reason why so much salaries and pension could not be paid as at when due.
