Why Refineries Can't Work, By Ogbeh From Chuks Okocha in Abuja National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Audu Ogbeh, has said that Federal Government's poor track record in running businesses is the major reason the nation's four petroleum refineries have remained non-functional. Ogbeh told newsmen in Abuja yesterday that the government is reluctant on embarking on turn around maintenance TAM of the refineries because of previous failure of the exercise. "Let me tell you as much as possible, government shouldn't be involved in any of these TAM we just don't do it well," he said. Ogbeh, who advised government to stay off all business concerns said, "we can't do them well, and that is what governments in other parts of the world have learnt, government has no business in business, no matter what you do, something will go wrong." The PDP Chairman further said "Show me anything that government is running that is running properly by way of business." Citing Nigeria Agricultural Fertiliser Company (NAFCON) as an example, Ogbeh expressed regret that whilst the NAFCON plant was built the same year as Malaysia's, the latter now boasts of 15 fertiliser plants.
