GSM Operators Kick Against Multiple Taxation From Cletus Akwaya in Abuja Operators of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) have kicked against what they described as multiple taxation by the Federal, state and local governments. Rising from the 4th GSM Consultative Forum in Abuja, the operators said they were concerned that, "imposing additional levies on the operators would translate in increasing costs, constrict rapid network roll-out especially in rural areas, compromise operators' ability to provide affordable mobile services to the populace and send wrong signals to financial quarters considering the cost of doing business in Nigeria." Senior executives attended the Forum hosted by M-Tel from MTN, V-Mobile, Glo Mobile as well as hosts M-Tel. In the communiqu� made available to THISDAY, the operators advised the telecommunications regulator, National Communications Commission (NCC) to "adopt a realistic and acceptable basis of calculating spectrum charges in line with international benchmarks," adding, "it should factor input from stakeholders in determining appropriate pricing methodology, which is not unduly burdensome on operators." Although indicated intention to support the National Assembly in its bid to review the nation's environmental law, it noted that GSM operations had no serious environmental problems.
