Dons Seek Liberalised Condition for Appointing VCs From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja University lecturers have cautioned against basing the appointment of Vice Chancellors to Federal Universities on the criteria of indigenship, arguing that such conditions would destroy the nation's cohesion, equity and fairness principles. The lecturers expressed this view at the monthly debate of the National Universities Commission (NUC) yesterday in Abuja. The dons comprising former and serving VCs of both private and federal universities stressed that the appointment of non-indigenes as VCs had served the institutions better than indigenes of host communities. Executive Secretary of the NUC, Professor Peter Okebukola, the VC of Convenant University Ota, Ogun State, Prof. Bola Ayeni, two former VCs of Minna and Umudike universities respectively, Prof Mohammed Daniyan and Placid Njoku all insisted that calling for indigenous VCs could cause lots of dislocation to the educational system. They noted that the NUC as the last hope of the tertiary institutions in the country should ensure that nothing is done to distract the universities as centres of academic excellence. Okebukola said the debate was fallout of persistent pressure on government by host communities of federal universities to appoint indigenous VCs.
