Immortalise Abiola, Says Adegbite
From Toba Suleiman in Abeokuta

Secretary-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) Dr Lateef Adegbite has berated the Federal government for its failure to immortalise the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential elections, Late MKO Abiola whose death in detention, he said paved way for the current democratic dispensation in the country.

Adegbite's condemnation came, as the Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, declared July 7 of every year as public holiday for people of the state in honour of the late Philanthropist.

Speaking at the 6th Fidau prayer organised by the State government in honour of the late business mogul, Adegbite lamented that someone who sacrificed his life to pave way for the democracy being enjoyed today by Nigerians and other Politicians, was yet to be honoured by the Federal Government.

The scribe told the gathering at the ceremony held at the MKO Abiola's family residence, Agura road, Oja - Agbo, Abeokuta, that he was sad and grieved that six years after the sudden death of Abiola the Federal Government has failed to immortalise him as a hero.

Adegbite said, continue to nurse a deep regret and grievance that this man who sacrificed his life, and his comfort and immense wealth that the seed of democracy may grow and prosper in Nigeria is yet to be properly acknowledged by the Nigerian Government

'We must today avail ourselves of the opportunity of this thoughtful remembrance event staged by Daniel to call on the Nigerian government to take concrete steps to immortalise the human phenomenon called MKO, Adegbite stated.

Recalling how Abiola died in mysterious circumstances in Abacha gulag, Adegbite said it is high time the federal government responded to the yearnings of Nigerians by immortalising Abiola.

While calling on all Oodua state governments to declare every July 7 public holidays, Adegbite said the resolution of the Senate some two years ago to name Abuja National Stadium in honour of Abiola should be actualised without further delay.
