Plateau:PDP Elders Move to Restructure Party
From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos
Following the state of emergency in Plateau and the polarisation of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, former Nigerian Ambassador to Kenya, Chief Fidelis Tapgun, has declared that founding party elders were looking for a way of restructuring the party.
This is coming against the background of a seeming battle for the soul of the party by the former chairman of PDP Chief Habu Shindai (who was systematically eased out by the suspended state governor) and his deputy who replaced him, Mr. Maichibi Vwarji. The two were called to the National Secretariat last week to find a lasting solution to the polarisation of the party in the state.
The general feeling in the state is that the elders in the state, particularly those at the National Assembly motivated the declarartion of state of emergency.
But in Jos yesterday, Tapgun disclosed that part of the problem that engulfed that state and that eventually led to recurring crises was the disenchantment among party members.
His words: Part of the problem that engulfed that state had to do with the exclusiveness in the administration of the state. People were sidelined and frustrated. So the party machinery in the state would be critically restructured. A number of founding members left PDP for other parties because of these entire problems and I think that with the restructuring, there is a possibility that these people will come back.
Tapgun who was a former governor of Plateau state affirmed that the decision of the federal government to impose a state of emergency in Plateau was in conjunction with the the party, also stated that when the first six months are up, it is the government and the party that would decide what would be the next action to be taken concerning the return of democratic structures in the state.
