Delta Laments Collapse of Warri Peace Deal From Onwuka Nzeshi in Warri The Delta State government, yesterday frowned upon the collapse of thepeace accord between the Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic groups, warning that it would deal ruthlessly with any person or group of persons kicking against peace in Warri. Commissioner for Inter-Ethnic Relations and Conflict Resolution, Mr Ovuzuorie Macaulay stated this yesterday while commenting on Monday's withdrawal of three Ijaw leaders from the latest peace accord signed between the Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic groups. Macaulay who was government's representative and chief mediator at the now collapsed peace deal disclosed that security agencies have been detailed to keep a tab on the movement and activities of those ethnic leaders who detest peace and are bent on turning the hand of the clock backwards. By rejecting the peace accord, Macaulay said, the Ijaw leaders were invariably beating the war drums again and plotting to plunge Warri and its environs into a fresh round of ethnic violence. According to the conflict resolution commisioner, there was yet no cause for alarm as the three leaders who announced their withdrawal from the peace deal were only a little fraction of the Ijaw delegation to the peace conference. THISDAY gathered that Chief Wellington Okrika, Chief Jonathan Ari and Mr Clark Gbenewei all of whom withdrew from the peace deal hailed from Gbaramatu Kingdom, one of the four Ijaw groups that were represented at the peace table.
