Army Housing Scheme Gulps N2.5b From Segun Awofadeji in Bauchi Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Martin Luther Agwai, has disclosed that over N2.5 billion has been expended on the construction and rehabilitation of houses for retired military personnel in the country. Agwai who disclosed this in Bauchi, venue of this year's Army Day Celebration tagged "NADCEL 2004", said the houses built under the post-service housing scheme of the Nigerian Army are located in 16 states of the federation. He said the post-service housing scheme is being embarked upon to afford retired officers and soldiers who served the nation, the opportunity to retire into befitting homes, rather than roam the streets in search of shelter. The COAS who noted that the Nigerian Army was well focused in enhancing the welfare of its officers and men, pointed out that the scheme was to be replicated in all Local Government Headquarters across the country. Agwai disclosed that the scheme derived its funds through contributions by subscribers, including civilians who contributed 15 per cent of their monthly salary, and about 1,500 people have benefited from the scheme. He advised officers and soldiers to contribute to the fund, and enjoined them to be patient and dedicated to the fund, as the post-service housing scheme would take longer time for one to be eligible. The COAS said that the Army Day Celebrations which was instituted about 26 years ago has continued to serve as an occasion for stock-taking and sober reflection on the corporate achievements and performance of the Nigerian Army at home and abroad.
