Lagos Inuagurates Own Security Outfit

As part of efforts to further enhance the safety of lives and property of its citizenry, Lagos State Government has inuagurated its own security outfit - Neighbourhood Watch with new co-ordinators inducted yesterday in the 57 Local Government Areas in the state.
With an aim to enhance community policing, the state government has affirmed its commitment to empower the Neigbourhood Watchers with necessary tools and intellectual capacity to effectively tackle the challenges ahead in their operations.
The state Rural Development Commissioner Dr. Tola Kasali gave the assurance at the induction of the newly appointed Neigbourhood watch co-ordinators, saying, over the past years, government has monitored the evolvement of Neigbourhood watch into steady outfit, that complement the efforts of Nigerian Police Force in ensuring the safety of lives and property of the citizenry especially at the grassroots level.
"Let me assure you of government's determination to ensure that huge financial commitment expended to achieve the objectives for establishing Neigbourhood Watch is not defeated, Kasali," added.
The Commissioner noted that when the Neighbourhood watch was set up under Edict No.34 Volume 29 of October 21, 1996, little did the state government know that it would become a veritable tool for crime reduction in the state. He said that with the string of achievements of the watchers it is worthy of note to realise that measures put in place to ensure a steady growth of the organisation were not in vain.
The Commissioner therefore enjoined the newly appointed co-ordinators to see their appointment as an opportunity to serve their communities, their local government and the entire people of the state.
He equally enjoined members of the public to imbibe the culture of furnishing the law enforcement agents with useful information that may lead, to the arrest of criminals in their communities.
Ealier in his welcome address, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development, Are Ademola Taiwo said that any human effort most especially that which bothers on security of lives and property deserve maximum attention, adding that efforts must be properly co-ordinated and controlled in order to be assured of its effectiveness and efficiency.
