Haruna Appoints Commissioner Hama Bachama
From Abel Orih in Yola
Adamawa State Governor, Boni Haruna, has approved the appointment of the State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Asaph Zadok as the new Hama Bachama following the deposition of the paramount ruler of Bachama Chiefdom, Hama Bachama Freddy Sediti Bongo last month.
Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Alhaji Ibrahim Bapetel, announced the appointment yesterday in a press briefing at Government House, Yola.
The SSG said the approval followed the selection of Mr. Asaph Zadok by the Bachama Kingmakers, saying that the action was in line with the provisions of the Numan Federation Local Authority (Modification of Native Law and Custom Relating to the Selection of Chief of Bachama) order 1970.
He said, "the selection was duly endorsed by the Chairman, Numan Local Government as presented by the Kingmakers." Bapetel who expressed disdain with reports of some national dailies (not THISDAY) for misinforming the public that the traditional Kingmakers of Bachama land have refused to appoint a new Hama Bachama, cautioned against such reports.
"As a matter of fact, we want to dispute that erroneous report because we have already received a letter from the Numan Local Government council informing us that the Kingmakers of Bachama Chiefdom have sat and approved the appointment of Mr. Asaph Zadok as the new Hama Bachama and has forwarded the letter containing the signatories of the Kingmakers."
The traditional selectors of a new Hama Bachama according to the law of the Numan Federation, he said, are the Senior Zeke and the Nzopwato who has every right to appoint a new paramount leader following the death, deposition or resignation of the Chief of Bachama.
He however, said if there is any dispute amongst the two groups over numerous candidates then the emergence of a new Hama Bachama has to come through an electoral college, a situation under which a thorough election exercise has to be conducted for a winner to emerge.
