Ibru Defends Colleagues, National Assembly
From Jaiyeola Andrews in Asaba

A former governor of Delta State Senator Felix Ibru has defended his colleagues in the against accusations of non-performance by the National Assembly.

Ibru who spoke to journalists in Asaba, after visiting the Delta State House of Assembly said the National Assembly needed more time because, of all the arms of government, it was the least privileged. He said it was only the legislative arm of government that had suffered discontinuities as a result of military interregnums and coups.

"The legislature is the most under-privileged because they have not had continuous experience. For many years, it's always stop and start, stop and start. How do you compare that with the experience of the executive arm, which under the military or civilian, has been more or less continuous," he said.

Ibru, therefore, called for patience and understanding from Nigerians with the National Assembly.

He said that the legislative arm of government was not necessarily in opposition to the executive despite the oversight functions of the legislature. He said the cooperation that had been demonstrated by the legislature with the executive was a reflection of the understanding disposition of the Senate, while refuting alegations that the Senate had always played to the gallery, particularly, over the way it handled the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Plateau State.

"We don't play to the gallery. In fact we don't face the gallery. We are almost the last resort, the highest House therefore, we have to be very careful. We made sure that we did not step outside the provisions of the Constitution," he said.

Ibru also used the occasion to praise the vibrant nature of the debates on the floor of the House.
