Odili Tasks Customs on Illegal Arms' Importation Rivers From Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt The quantities and qualities of weapons which found their way into the country could have been stopped, if men of the Nigerian Customs Service live to their statutory responsibility to check the illegal smuggling of sophisticated weapons into the country. "By law, you are charged with ensuring that everything that is imported equipment passes through your scrutiny; therefore, checking the importation of illegal, harmful equipments and weapons squarely rests on you." Rivers State Governor, Dr. Peter Odili made this assertion yesterday when the Assistant Comptroller General of Customs Zone C, Mr. Funso Amasa paid him a courtesy call at Brick House, Port Harcourt. According to the Governor, the Presence of such weapons in the country has given rise to an upsurge in gangsters and cult activities in the society. Odili argued "since sophisticated weapons are manufactured abroad, and can only come into our streets by breaking through the ports, it becomes your moral duty to ensure that no illegal weapons sneaks through your net." The governor who was very blunt said security reports indicated that the level of sophistication of these illegal weapons point to the fact that they are coming from abroad, and wondered how they are able to sneak through the customs undetected. He told the customs Boss that the state government would give maximum support to whatever it would take to stop this illegal weapons entry, particularly now that the Zone C headquarters has been relocated from Owerri to Port Harcourt. Odili lauded the zone for the huge amount of revenue it is generating into the Federation Account, reminding the officers and men to ensure that the state also benefit from their successes.
