Plateau NPC Ready for Census From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos Plateau State Federal Commissioner for the National Population Commission, Chief John Kum, has assured that adequate arrangements were in place to ensure a hitch-free Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) exercise. Kum told newsmen in Jos that equipment and materials to be used have been procured. The eqiuoment include Global Positioning System (GPS), computer hardwares, softwares and reprographic materials. He explained that the EAD was an instrument to facilitate population census and not the counting of the population. "The size or number of enumeration areas created in any particular community or administrative unit will therefore not determine the eventual population figures which will be based on physical enumeration of people during the census period. The size or number of EADs created will be purely determined by technical and logistic considerations of the ability of a pair of enumerators to cover the EADs within a specific period," he said. Kum said the programme was not designed for boundary adjustments or alteration, but called on state governments and local government areas to as a matter of urgency, resolve inter state and intra state boundary problems. According to him, the first phase of the exercise has commenced in seven local government areas covering the six geographical zones, adding that the second and third phases will commence on September 1 and January 1, 2005 respectively.
