ALGON Boss Decries Lapses in LGs System From Daniel Ior in Makurdi Newly elected National President, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Hon Baver Dzeremo, has decried what he said was the constitutional conflicts and lapses inherent in the third-tier of government and would focus on correcting the imperfections in order to reposition the local government system in the country. Dzeremo said he was particularly worried over the non-specification of duties of the local governments in the constitution and explained that the situation was detrimental to effective performance of the local governments in the country. The ALGON president who spoke at a cocktail in his honour, noted that the resolution of the constitutional problems associated with the councils was necessary to positively reposition the third tier of government as well as enhance stability. He noted the strategic importance of the local governments in the democratic process and in enhancing the nation's image both at home and abroad. For these reasons the president stated that he would do everything possible to ensure that the local governments perform well. Contending that ALGON would ensure that its members shore up their performances as well as ensure that the right things are done. Benue State governor, Mr George Akume, also speaking at the occasion, described the election of Dzeremo as national president of ALGON as a further testimony that the state is being appreciated and noticed. He said ALGON is a veritable voice in the countrys Democractic process. He urged on the people to give the new president advises that would help him succeed in his new challenge.
