...Chairman Wins Award for Innovation in Telecom Sector
Industry captain and one of the icons of Telecommunications in Nigeria SIR ANNIE OKONKWO has for the second time this year alone been named winner of an International Award for Excellence. He was named recipient of the prestigious International Entrepreneurial Excellence Award organized by SMEDAN, an arm of the presidency and Minotel UK of LONDON.
In a blaze of glory, Sir Okonkwo the Chairman of RELTEL, along with other notable Captains of industry in various regions of Africa, was given the Award in London recently. The RelTel Chairman's selection was in recognition of the revolutionary impact of his enterprenuerial skills and immense contributions to the development of the global economy. Especially, through innovative mass appeal approach to goal attainment issues as amply borne out by his successful grassroots delivery of reliable telecommunications services to homes in Nigeria.
It will be recalled that Sir Okonkwo through his RELTEL phone company was the first Private Telephone Operator in Nigeria, to embark on an aggressive Network Expansion programme for effective coverage. RELTEL also provided the critical cutting edge for trail blazing leveraged services in fixed wireless telephony in Nigeria, through one touch dial and internet enabled capability, voice mail service and short message services facilities.
Okonkwo is also the Chairman of Clemco Group, the umbrella group for several vibrant companies with strong presence in oil, energy, manufacturing and Banking sectors. A couple of months ago, Sir Annie was also named winner of DR. KWAME NKRUMA AFRICAN LEADERSHIP AWARD for innovative excellence in telecommunication services. Also honoured at that event but in a different category is the present Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo. OkonEwo has been in the fore-front of advocating and implementing business policies that have social-welfarist impact on the lives of the populace. At the inception of RELTEL on November 17th 2001 he declared before a teeming crowd: "I want to make reliable telephones available to every home in Nigeria".
