Mantu, suspended legislators reconcile

By Adetutu Folasade-Koyi, Abuja and Onoja Audu,

Special Correspondent, JOS

Reconciliation between Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu and lawmakers in Plateau State House of Assembly took place on Wednesday in Abuja where they pledged to support the Sole Administrator, Gen Chris Alli.

Mantu also said the suspension of Governor Joshua Dariye and the state of emergency in the state is ‘an act of God.’  He absolved himself from complicity in the declaration of the state of emergency imposed on the state on May 18 by President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He said this when the state’s 24 lawmakers led by Speaker Simon Lalong visited him on a fence-mending mission. Mantu told them that he “has nothing to gain, either from your suspension or that of Dariye. I do not gain anything by you being on suspension.”

Giving a situation report on the state to Mantu, Lalong said the state of emergency was the only panacea to restoring peace in the state. “Peace is being restored to the state through the state of emergency and we have been cooperating with Alli and we will continue to cooperate with him.”

The deputy senate president said, “The state of emergency and suspension of Dariye were all an act of God. Power comes from God and Obasanjo has no power on his own to remove Dariye except if God allows him.”

Third Republic governor of the state, Ambassador Fidelis Tapgun, denied media reports that Plateau stakeholders who went to Abuja last week to see Obasanjo demanded an extension of the state of emergency.

Speaking with journalists in Jos, on Wednesday Tapgun said all that was presented to Obasanjo was the commendation they gave him and the National Assembly for reacting promptly to the critical situation in the state.
