NADECO chieftains for Soyinka Lecture
By Bolaji Adepegba,
Senior
Correspondent, Lagos
The
annual Wole Soyinka Commemorative Lecture organised by the National Association of Seadogs (NAS)
on the birthday of the Nobel laureate will be delivered by former
stalwart of the defunct National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Rear
Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu.
The
lecture, which is the sixth in the series, will hold on Tuesday July 13, 2004 at the Agip Hall of the MUSON Centre,
Onikan, Lagos under the chairmanship of another NADECO chieftain and
former military chief, Lt Gen. Alani Akinrinade. The President of the
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, and former Vice
Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Ayo Banjo will be
guests of honour.
At a
pre-event briefing held by NAS in Lagos, former National Capon of NAS,
Mr. Ben Oguntuase said that the choice of the NADECO chieftain and
military officers for this year’s event was a pure coincidence and not in
any way an endorsement of the class they represent.
“We
look at the people and deal with them based on their personal quality.
The choice of Admiral Kanu and General Akinrinade is in no way an
endorsement of either the military as a class or NADECO,” he said.
In a
statement presented by a NAS member and General Manager, Afribank, Mr. Henry Semitari,
this year’s lecture, which incidentally coincides with Soyinka’s 70th
birthday, is a further confirmation of the stand of the association’s
determination to continue to contribute to the positive development of
Nigeria.
He
cited how NAS’ Soyinka Commemorative Lectures have over the years treated
themes that addressed the need to re-engineer the Nigerian national
social order as it impacts on the diversity of Nigeria. These lectures,
some of which were delivered
by Chief Rotimi Williams (SAN) in 2001 and Prof. Esko Toyo, have over the
years gathered Nigerians of noble standing to publicly bring their wealth
of knowledge to bear on the attainment of an egalitarian society which
NAS has advocated in its 5 2 years of existence.
