PRESIDENCY:Forget 2007, Onoh tells Igbo

By Tony Edike, Enugu
Sunday, July 11, 2004

'THERE is no prominent Igbo politician that has come out to say that he wants to contest the presidency. I am also certain based on historical antecedents that in 2007, twenty Igbo will emerge as presidential candidates only to gain accolades of former presidential candidates and thereafter chicken out ”

With these words, elder statesman and former governor of old Anambra State, Chief Christian Chukwuma Onoh, foreclosed the emergence of the president of Igbo extraction in the country in 2007.

Onoh spoke at the weekend against the backdrop of the controversy concerning which part of the nation should produce the successor to President Olusegun Obasanjo whose two-term tenure expires in May 2007.
Obasanjo himself triggered the controversy afresh when, against the preponderance of opinion that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had zoned the 2007 Presidency to the North, he said at a media parley penultimate Sunday that only the South-West, where he hails from, could be excluded from the succession race.

Onoh, who ruled the old Anambra State for three months in 1983, said since his Igbo people were not prepared for the 2007 presidential race, they should forget it.

“Among the Igbo, there are discordant voices within the ruling party. Governor Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia State maintained that presidency was zoned to the North by the PDP. Governor Sam Egwu is consistent in insisting that this is the turn of the Igbo. One issue then arises: There is no prominent Igbo politician that has come out to say he wants to contest the presidency,” he told Sunday Vanguard in Enugu on Friday.
