A
14-year-old schoolgirl, Rosemary Onoyoseme, was among those killed on
Tuesday during an early morning raid by soldiers on Amadi-Ama and Okrika
settlements in the sub urban area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Residents
claimed that as many as 10 persons may have died.
A combined
team of soldiers and mobile policemen was sent to the area, following a
tip-off, to conduct a house-to-house search to recover illegal arms.
Father of the
deceased, Francis Onoyoseme, said she was shot on the chest by a soldier
who forcefully opened the room where they were lying on the floor.
Rosemary was a student of Ovum Grammar School, Warri and had come home on
holiday.
Several
residents, who fled their homes in tattered clothes, said they began
hearing heavy gun shots as early as 4 a.m. on Tuesday morning. By about 6 a.m. when they
attempted to flee, they were forced to remain indoors only to see
soldiers parading everywhere, searching each home.
And in Delta
State, the invasion of some Ijaw communities by men of the Joint Military
Taskforce in Warri since last Sunday has led to the razing of three Ijaw
communities in Warri North Council, the Federated Niger Delta Ijaw Communities
(FNDIC) alleged on Tuesday.
They include
Ogbudugbudu, Opia and Sonny Zoro Zion and were said to have been touched
during a search for killers of American and Nigerian oil workers who were
gunned down at Olero Creek in April.
Taskforce
Commander Brig. Gen. Elias Zamani had on Monday said his men had occupied
Ogbudugbudu in search of the assassins.
FNDIC
President Oboko Bello who confirmed the attacks on the Ijaw communities
appealed to the taskforce “to conduct the search for the criminals with
decorum; we appeal for more caution so that we can arrive at settlement
and peace after all these exercises”.
He said residents have fled the area but could not say if the
invasion had led to any death.
