Lagos shuts firms over drainage
By Remi Akinleye

FOR obstructing drainage alignment meant to aid free flow of water, the Lagos State government has shut down two multi-national firms (names withheld).

In a statement, the state Ministry of Environment said the closure was due to a discovery made by the state executive council while on a tour of flood-ravaged areas in Victoria Island.

It was discovered that some private and corporate entities had completely blocked drainage channels with structures, thereby narrowing and constricting the course of storm water.

In the same vein, Araromi Oke-Odo Market in Agbado, Oke-Odo Council and the Alade Market in Ikeja, were also sealed up due to failure to observe market cleanliness in and around the place.

The government has, however, renewed its detest of environment nuisance in the state and would no longer tolerate acts that could destroy the environmental quality thus, frustrating laudable environmental programmes.

The statement signed by the ministry's Principal Public Relations Officer, Sina Thorpe, said the Itirin Canal in Victoria Island is paramount, adding that any house or structure obstructing free passage of water would be demolished.
