Pharmacists allay fears over fake injection water

AMIDST reports of soaring number of sub-standard water injection preparations circulating in the country, pharmacists yesterday allayed fears over the issue, insisting that such water had not been used in all injections.
The pharmacists said: "The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Lagos State branch has further allayed fears of the public and consumers that the water for injections is not in all injections. To this extent, pre-mix injection solutions, the common chloroquine, analgin and so on, are not affected.
"The commonly affected injections are those in powder form which cannot be pre-mixed since their active ingredients are unstable in the acqueous phase", Mr. Olumide Akintayo, chairman, Lagos Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria stated.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) had last week released the report of over 149 samples of injection water analysed by it since 2001, granting a clean bill of health to only two brands.
The report had created panic among members of the public who believed that injections belong to those special groups of pharmaceutical preparations that should be prepared under sterile conditions to guarantee germ-free products.
In its investigations, The Guardian gathered that there is hardly any local pharmaceutical company producing injections or sterile products that is sub-standard and this follows logically that most batches of water for injections analysed by NAFDAC were imported into the country.
However, Akintayo decried the long delay in releasing the result of the analysis that commenced in 2001, saying the proliferation of sub-standard water for injections is a fallout of the chaotic drug distribution network in Nigeria.
He praised the investigation and findings of NAFDAC, which he said has led to the destruction of fake drugs and unregulated products around Lagos State, Onitsha and Ariaria markets, among others.
