Nigeria sends N14m items to Sudanese refugees

THE Federal Government is to airlift and distribute relief materials worth about N14 million to refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan.

The distribution will be handled by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) whose officials are expected to depart for the region tomorrow.

The initiative for the delivery was at the instance of the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs after the Sudanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Abdel Rahim Akhalil had met and briefed him on the progress made in the peace process consummated in Kenya.

The Kenya meeting was held with a view to ending the Sudan conflict, which has been dubbed the oldest conflict in Africa.

The humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region has been variously described as the world's worst humanitarian disaster requiring the urgent attention of international donors.

United States Secretary of State, Collin Powell, last month visited the region to assess the humanitarian needs of the refugees.

In the spirit of African brotherliness, Nigeria had been at the forefront of assisting African countries in time of need.

In year 2000, NEMA undertook the delivery of relief materials to countries in South Africa - Botswana, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe - to alleviate the draught, which ravaged them at the time.

The Republic of Congo, Niger, Mali, Algeria and Ethiopia at one time or another benefited from the Nigerian government's humanitarian gesture.

The item to be taken to the Darfur region include 2,000 pieces each of blankets and towels; 600 bags of rice; 1,000 cartons of beverages; 500 bags of flour and some kegs of vegetable oil.
