ONITSHA— CRISIS is looming between the Nsugbe Community and authorities of the Anambra State College of Education located in the town over a petition written by the college to the Anambra State Police Command alleging that the community was shielding criminals from Police arrest. The college had alleged that some indigenes of their host community were involved on a robbery operation in the college some time ago.
The college through its Chief Security Officer Mr. M.U Anyanwu had in the petition addressed to the police Area Commander in Onitsha, alleged that instead of helping to fish for the criminals who raided the college, the community was busy trying to secure the release of the arrested persons. The petition therefore urged the police to order the Nsugbe town union executive to produce all the wanted persons in their (police) list to the police without further delay and also to hand over the security of the lives and properties of the college community to the Nsugbe town union executive and their titled holders.
Angered by the petition, Nsugbe community picked on the Chief Security Officer, describing the petition as “malicious and continued attempt by the management” of the Nwafor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe to discredit and assassinate the highly esteemed image and character of the entire people of Nsugbe”.
“This malicious damage has also been extended to the Igwe, the council of elders, prominent politicians, President General of Nsugbe Development Union (NDU) and the President of National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Mr. Anthony Nwoye, a native of Nsugbe. The people of Nsugbe are aware of this recent character assassination and dangerous steps being taken by some misguided people on the staff of Nwafor Orizu college of Education Nsugbe”, the community said in a statement signed by Chiefs M.C Egbuche and Obi Aghadiuno, President-General and publicity secretary respectively of Nsugbe town union.
The community called on the Anambra State Government to call the college authorities to order and asked for a public apology from the Chief Security Officer and threatened “to take any legal and protect her honour”.
