Abakaliki—A Lecturer, Professor Chinyere Okunna of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, has identified education as the key to a very bright and proud future for youths in the country. Okunna who was the guest speaker at the 8th Speech and Prize giving ceremony of Federal Government College Okposi, Ebonyi State urged the students of the college to take their studies serious as a means of ensuring a bright future. Speaking on the topic “Your future is in your hands” Professor Okunna noted that “Future can come in various ways, you can have a bright future, a gloomy future, you can have a hopeless future even, but if you bend down today and appreciate your good fortune, you will do well in future” She pointed out that how a student behaves, how he studies his books, how he behaves towards his teachers, parents and even those he comes across in his day to day life, “would determine what he will be in the future”
“Your future is in your hands, and what you do with it, will not depend on the government, on your parents, on the teacher, but on yourself”
She urged parents to create a safe and enabling environment within the home for the growth of their children and to maintain a model of emulation for the children.“I hope the mothers and fathers are not fighting at home and creating a wrong impression of marriage to their children. I hope the parents are nuturing the children in the fear of God”, she said.
In a remark, the Director Primary and Secondary Education Dr. U. B. Ahmed noted that the Federal Government reckons highly with the character molding of its young citizens, “this is done through the Unity schools nationwide.”
“Every good citizen of Nigeria is expected to be interested in the future of our young ones and the country as a whole. It is therefore our duty to prepare the ground for these young ones, to enable them meet the challenges of tommorrow,” he said.
